Beverley renovated the gardens, too, with help from Oakland landscape designer Tod Rimrodt, who cleaned up the overgrown perennial beds and refreshed gravel paths that connect the landscape's many nooks and crannies. Rimrodt also devised raised beds for Beverley's herbs and vegetables, and Robert planted pear, plum, and peach saplings near the old apple trees.

The Wesmans
Now the Wesmans' weekends revolve around pulling weeds and wielding clippers. Robert, who'd had little chance to demonstrate his green thumb before, prunes the fruit trees and experiments constantly with organic-fertilizer blends. "He's a doctor," Beverley says. "He likes to keep things healthy!" At the end of each stay, they have a trunkful of harvested pears and cut flowers—and, of course, 'Early Girl,' Brandywine, and 'Sweet 100' tomatoes. "We love bringing the bounty back to the city for our friends," she says.
