Guest Cottage
A self-proclaimed "frustrated architect," Brown leafed through magazines for a year before drawing up plans for a 1,000-square-foot, one-bedroom cabin. Though he left the major construction to the pros, Brown added the oak floors, knotty-pine paneling, and kitchen cabinetry himself—recycling wood scraps buddies had given him. Friends also lent services, including helping to install copper pipes and a water heater. Payment tended to be an invitation for dinner or a weekend on the farm.

Guest Cottage: Bedroom
The poplar 1940s headboards are painted with floral detail, and the linens are Home Goods bargains.
Bright idea: Turned upside down, an old metal washtub works as a nightstand.
Guest Cottage: Smart Storage
Brown devised the ingenious barn-wood stairs, which store linens, candles, and games.
