A Sprawling Kentucky Retreat - Part 3

Bathhouse
Brown and Woods also converted a corn crib into a bathhouse and built a barn with enough bunks to sleep 14. These days, as many as 40 people can find a cozy place to spend the night on the property.

Bathhouse: Shower

Brown and Woods relied on flowers, shrubs, and vines to unify all those buildings and make them feel rooted. "The farm had beautiful vistas of pasture and woodlands, but there were no fences or any plantings aside from some fescue grass and a few trees. It was a blank slate," Brown recalls. "We wanted everything to look like it had been here forever." Virginia creeper and trumpet vines entwine the cabin porch, audaciously poking through the shower shack's windows.

In this photo: Inside, Brown created the geometric floor and walls—inspired by an image in a book of Charles Jencks's garden designs—with ceramic and porcelain tiles.

Bathhouse: Rustic Fixtures

Nottingham Brass faucets outfit the bathhouse's vintage farm sink. (Despite the sign, hot water is usually plentiful.)

Lounging Around

On the cabin's porch, Lola Rose—a friend's Australian Cattle dog—claims an antique chair.
