A Wooded Tennessee Retreat - Part 2

Staircase

The greatest irony? Though Travis began with a vision of the ideal hunting cabin, he barely hunts these days. He's too busy making mud pies with his kids and caring for his land.

In this photo: Velvet ribbons, glass ornaments, and pinecones brighten a staircase leading to the kids' bedroom.

Bedroom

Travis secured additional reclaimed logs from a barn and a smokehouse to create a master bedroom and a large screened porch. A '50s-era settee sidles up to an iron bed by Pottery Barn. A pine chest and a round table take the place of matchy-matchy nightstands. Travis, a violinist, keeps the Gibson bass guitar on hand for guests. The wall is painted Monroe Bisque HC-26 Latex Flat by Benjamin Moore.

Front Porch

Most of the furnishings in their home boast past lives. To welcome visitors, Travis scored the front porch's weathered bench, once part of a Whole Foods display, at a local liquidation auction.

The Family

To date, Travis has planted over 100 trees, nursing them through drought, and carved out a one-mile hiking path on the hilltop. Travis and Katherine also partnered with the Land Trust for Tennessee on a conservation easement, ensuring that, even when they're gone, the property won't be commercially developed. Instead, it will continue to provide vistas for their children's children. "It gives me tremendous satisfaction to know this place will always be here," he says. "This world still needs big open spaces with hay bales and cattle."

In this photo: Travis and Katherine entertain their son and daughter on the screened porch, outfitted with a Frontgate wicker sofa, a pair of antique beach chairs, and a woven trunk turned coffee table. The rug is from Pottery Barn.

A Wooded Tennessee Retreat

Inveterate collector Travis Robeson planned to build a one-room cabin in Tennessee hunt country—until his stash of salvaged lumber and stone outgrew the blueprint. Which is how his whole family wound up with a cozy cabin.

Hunting and Gathering

Sometimes even the humblest task can balloon into a humongous project. Tidying a cupboard, for instance, provides an excuse to install spice racks. So it was for Travis and Katherine Robeson when they started clearing out the garage at their Franklin, Tennessee, home. What began as an innocent attempt at organization resulted in a country house built from scratch.

"I'm a collector. I can't help it," says Travis of how the garage got so overstuffed in the first place. But it was another obsession—hunting—that inspired him to draw upon his "collections" and raise a one-room cabin on 57 wooded acres south of town.

In this photo: An industrial worktable, topped with custom-cut glass, serves as the kitchen's island; the stools were also rescued from a factory. A vintage zinc icebox offers hidden storage, while open Douglas-fir shelves hold dishes and cookware. The stainless steel stove is Jenn-Air.

Eating Area

The land came first. One fall day, Travis, a realtor, visited a property that adjoined acreage his father had recently acquired. "The sugar maples were the same brilliant orange as the colors of the University of Tennessee, where Katherine and I met," he recalls. Then he and Katherine discovered they were expecting, and the blueprint for that modest one-room shack expanded to a 1,300-square-foot family retreat. They now have two children: a son, 5, and daughter, 2.

In this photo: Marlowe, a Scottish terrier, joins Katherine and the kids at a hand-carved dining table from Travis's parents' antiques shop. The elder Robesons bought the chairs during a trip to Montana.

Bright idea: Mounted on a wall, hard-working tools like these wooden foundry molds double as striking art.

Living Room

To construct the cabin, Travis had to supplement the cache in his garage. "I wanted the cabin to look as if it had been sitting here for a century," he says of the search for "reclaimed, local, honest materials that tell the story of their heritage." He found a stack of numbered poplar logs that had once been another cabin, and pine boards from an abandoned grain mill that were "beautifully peppered with worm holes and square-head nails." To put it all together, Travis hired area craftsmen schooled in the methods of yesteryear.

In this photo: Carved-wood cookie molds and burlap ribbon decorate the living room tree.

Mantel

Composed of Tennessee rock and reclaimed poplar, the living room's hearth hosts one of Travis's hunting trophies, as well as stockings sewn from linen.

Sitting Area

Together, these meaningful totems effect a vibe that's worldly, yet so familiar, it's hard to believe the house was constructed in the past decade.

In this photo: Laurie's collection of vintage tramp-art mirrors hangs above a custom settee—enlivened by a Utility Canvas quilted blanket—in the master bedroom. Westbrook sourced the carpet, sewn with Turkish flour sacks, from Sullivan Fine Rugs. The panels behind the settee are painted Knoxville Gray by Benjamin Moore, while the wall above is DKC-39 by Donald Kaufman.

Guest Bedroom

An 1880s wicker chaise, a Turkish kilim rug, and a floor lamp fashioned from an old weather vane cozy up a guest room. The landscape painting dates to the late 1930s.

Guest Bathroom

Rather than hide the guest bathroom's custom-painted Sunrise Specialty tub behind a shower curtain, Laurie opted for a faucet with hand-shower attachment by Newport Brass. The paneled walls are painted DKC-12 by Donald Kaufman.

Bright idea: An old mailbox finds new life as a bath caddy.

On Display

A weathered shelving unit, unearthed at a flea market, holds an assortment of glass-stoppered chemist's bottles. The wall is painted DKC-47 by Donald Kaufman.

The Buchmillers

"I longed for a place where we could all congregate," Laurie says, "since we never had that growing up." What she got? A home so welcoming, nobody ever wants to leave.

In this photo: Laurie and Gordon enjoy coffee and the view from the deck atop their boathouse.

Making a Georgia Lake House Home - Part 2

Breakfast Room

When building the house, Laurie turned to Atlanta architect Keith Summerour, who tapped area artisans to craft the home using native hardwoods.

In this photo: Wicker armchairs by Larsen and vintage bentwood bistro seats surround the table, dressed with a swath of Tunisian silk.

Hallway

An antique runner from Budapest and a bench made by Laurie's grandfather bring a sense of history to the upstairs hallway, which overlooks the home's great room. "We chose vintage doorknobs that are grazed and nicked, and just wonderful to wrap your hand around," Laurie explains. The doors are painted Red Rock by Benjamin Moore.

Master Bedroom

Laurie also worked with interior designer Barbara Westbrook to weave in a few Southern archetypes from wicker antiques to a decommissioned sign from a Georgia railroad route. Other pieces—this twiggy bed, leather club chairs—could've come straight from an Adirondack lodge, and offer a wistful nod to Laurie's New England summers.

In this photo: Laurie scored her bedroom's reclaimed sign from a Georgia railroad route—imploring conductors to announce their approach—at a local antiques shop. Ditto the lamps and the folk-art chest. Flat Rock Furniture made the hickory bed.

Making a Georgia Lake House Home

After decades spent globe-trotting, Laurie Buchmiller finally settled in Georgia. Then, she built a rustic house her loved ones can always call home.

Traveler's Insurance

When Laurie Buchmiller and her husband, Gordon, a property developer, moved to Atlanta in 1996 with their children, Tim and Julia, now in their 20s, something changed for the couple, who had previously lived in Philadelphia, Charlotte, and Tampa. "We fell in love with Georgia: the landscape, the weather, the people," Laurie explains. "We made lifelong friends, and found a true home."

No wonder, then, that she and Gordon didn't stray too far in their quest for a getaway. Just over 90 miles from Atlanta, a plot of land deep in the Chattahoochee National Forest—enveloped on three sides by Lake Burton and graced with breathtaking views of the Appalachian Mountains—spoke to the Buchmillers.

In this photo: Appealingly asymmetrical built-ins—one with hidden storage, the other open—flank the great room's fieldstone fireplace. French leather club chairs from Wyatt Childs, plus a pair of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams sofas, serve up plenty of seating.

Front Entrance

An Air Force brat, Laurie was born in Alaska and spent a chunk of her adolescence in Germany, punctuated by summers with her grandparents in New England. When she set out to build her lakeside home, she wanted a place where family and guests alike were welcome.

In this photo: The entryway's antique pine bench offers a spot for removing shoes.

Bright idea: Laurie mined a circa-1910 educational flip-chart for a wall's worth of art.

Kitchen

Soapstone counters and a matching backsplash complement the kitchen's custom cabinetry, including an island framed with salvaged heart-pine beams. The iron-and-mahogany stools are by Wright Table. The cabinets and island are painted Dawn Mist by Pratt & Lambert.

Closet

Beasley transformed a small room into a walk-in closet and bathroom.

Bathroom

Across from the clothing rack, Beasley installed a salvaged clawfoot tub and painted it in Smoke & Mirrors by Benjamin Moore. She regularly swaps out the photos and drawings, though the 1913 dress form always sticks around.

Thea Beasley

When guests come over, it's natural that Beasley's eclectic decor gets them intrigued. If the objects get guests talking, they also tell a story—of a woman who has come into her own along with her home. "All these things we find are pieces of ourselves," she adds. "I've built a future by rummaging through the past."

In this photo: Beasley works at her studio table, which she draped in linen. In the background, painted shutters, unearthed at a flea market, hide an air-conditioning unit.

Inside an Atlanta Industrial Loft - Part 3

Bedroom

Now a stylist, too, the painter travels the globe on photo shoots for furniture ads and catalogs, gathering souvenirs along the way: a rustic wooden stool in Toronto, seashells from the Caribbean, and stacks of French linens, which she uses for upholstery, curtains, and tablecloths. "They are heavy, handwoven, and never too white," Beasley insists. "I've draped my whole world in them!"

In this photo: A poster from a 1978 Richard Avedon retrospective punctuates Anthropologie's wrought-iron bed. On either side, ceramic lamps by Arteriors sit atop mirrored Aidan Gray nightstands. The patterned pillowcase is from West Elm, and the duvet set from Soup Home; Beasley sewed the faux-fur throw herself.

Bright idea: Stashed at the foot of a bed, a large basket is easier to access than a usual trunk.

Office Area

Beasley's ripped leopard-print coat provided the upholstery for this whimsical chair, which accompanies a 1920s ebony desk. An African feather headdress and a black-and-white photo of Paris make for an eclectic mix.

Library

Beasley found charm in her apartment by uncovering tinted plaster beneath the peeling paint: "It was mottled and looked like a fresco," says Beasley, who preserved what she could and washed the rest of the walls in clean white.

In this photo: The library's iron daybed, draped with an antique cotton quilt, is more than 100 years old. The midcentury metal floor lamp came from a photo studio. The coffee table's a West Elm bargain.

Creative Space

Occasionally, Beasley disrupts the creamy color scheme with hits of black and gray. "Those darker shades bring attitude," she says. "They give white a high heel and make it pop." But it wasn't until she spread milky paint on the floors that Beasley realized the hue's true power: "It made the entire place glow."

In this photo: A 1970s task lamp sheds light on a corner of the library, where Beasley pins inspirational images on a 5' x 9' corkboard. The stools were carved by Senufo tribesmen in Africa. The floors are painted Ultra Pure White by Behr.

Artistic Arrangement

Taxidermied birds—a 1930s parrot (left) and a Victorian-era Australian Galah—perch among tarted-up storage boxes.

Bright idea: Beasley covered cardboard boxes—which hold arts-and-crafts supplies—in old French maps and newspapers.

Inside an Atlanta Industrial Loft

With a raw industrial space as her canvas, Atlanta painter and stylist Thea Beasley spent two decades shaping her most personal masterpiece: a study in the power of a pale palette.

The Artist in Residence

Twenty years ago, when Thea Beasley first laid eyes on her Georgia apartment, she was a young painter on the lookout for a "large studio to live and make art in." So she leaped at the chance to rent an affordable 3,500-square-foot loft in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta. Never mind that the unit's previous tenant, the local Board of Education, had divided the place into offices before vacating—in the 1960s. "The landlord thought I was crazy," Beasley recalls. "But the old girl had charm, even if I had to struggle to find it."

In this photo: Beasley stripped away layers of paint to reveal her walls' mottled plaster. A 1930s cabinet—composed of 80 cubbies—hosts an array of natural objects: shells, nests, antlers, feathers. A friend drew the charcoal illustration above the vintage bamboo chair. The trim is painted White Heron by Benjamin Moore.

 Kitchen

After ripping out all of the dropped ceilings and flimsy partitions, the artist was left with five generous rooms—none of which contained such basic amenities as a closet, tub, or stove. She saw possibilities, however, in what most would deem liabilities. Unrestrained by the usual residential conventions, Beasley introduced a clawfoot tub and a clothes rod in one room—now an incredibly spacious dressing area. In another, she installed countertops and a sink in the corner, then hung open shelves above them, creating a kitchen that blends seamlessly with the living area and library beyond.

In this photo: Beasley picked up the wicker chairs at a yard sale and stitched the sink skirt from alphabet-patterned fabric. The wooden bull's head is African. The walls here, in the bedroom, and in the dressing room, are painted Creamy by Sherwin-Williams.

Bright idea: A few pieces of framed art turn open shelving into an exhibit.

Living Room

The only rule Beasley refused to break? Her own—about maintaining a subdued palette. "That neutral background allowed me to layer on whatever interested my eye," she explains.

In this photo: Aidan Gray wingback chairs, upholstered in cotton and burlap, complement a sofa Beasley found at a Paris flea market. She fashioned the coffee table (painted in Gothic Arch by Benjamin Moore) by cutting a farm table down to size, then painting it warm gray. A wooden stool from a Toronto thrift shop elevates a shadow-boxed heron. The Mongolian-lambhair pillow is by West Elm, the tie-dyed cushions by Kevin O'Brien.

Martha's Vineyard Home and Garden Tour - Part 5

Homegrown Veggies

'Striped German' tomatoes are one of four varieties in the garden.

In the Garden

Lipsett and Bernstein will be adding a few extra place settings to welcome new friends made since Lipsett walked into Weiss's store. A few years, and a complete design overhaul later, the family finally feels rooted. "Getting to know all these amazing people was a surprising by-product of the process," she says. "We're part of the island now."

In this photo: Linda Lipsett stands amid the more than 50 types of edibles thriving in her 2,700-square-foot kitchen garden.

A Comprehensive Kitchen-Garden Plan

Garden designer Chris Fischer divided Lipsett's 30-by-90-foot plot into three distinct zones—a large central area bookended by two smaller sections—and outfitted each with raised beds that allow better control over the soil quality. To create a feeling of enclosure, he and Lipsett filled most of the beds along the perimeter with climbers, such as watermelon, squash, and tomatoes.

Interior beds hold low-lying edibles, including lettuces, onions, and potatoes. For the most part, like crops are grouped, with a couple of exceptions: Parsley lives among asparagus so that the vegetable's ferns, which grow throughout the summer, can shade the delicate herb. And tomatoes are underplanted with basil to make harvesting the classic combo a breeze.

Out Back

'Heavenly Blue' morning glories frame the garden's entrance.

Edible Arrangement

As the weather warms up, the family plans to forage for meal inspiration. When the tomatoes ripen, Lipsett's son-in-law will whip up his famous salsa for fish tacos. An abundance of strawberries will call for a tart.

In this photo: Fresh-picked collard greens, kohlrabi, and 'Scarlet Nantes' carrots are ready to be rinsed.

Around the Garden

Butternut squash vines soften the garden's exterior and create a sense of privacy.

Walkway

Lipsett and Bernstein also asked for Weiss's advice about the grounds. Weiss enlisted legendary landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh—who designed Hudson River Park in New York City and just happens to live down the road—to come up with a plan for replacing the bamboo grove, originally introduced to soften the backyard's steep incline. His answer? A meadow of native wildflowers and a gently graded path of stone risers lined on either side by mass plantings of hydrangeas, smoke bushes, and spireas.

In this photo: 'Tardiva' and 'Annabelle' hydrangeas, 'Diana' Rose of Sharon hibiscus, and Hosta plantaginea line the path behind the home.

Garden

An A-frame trellis supports 'Sunsweet' watermelon (left) and 'Waltham Butternut' squash vines.

Fruits and Veggies

To craft a kitchen garden, and fill it with the most delectable ingredients, Weiss and Lipsett roped in yet another neighbor: Chris Fischer, a chef who's worked under Mario Batali and hosts seasonal dinners at his family's Beetlebung Farm. This year, Lipsett's raised beds will be brimming with vegetables and herbs, while berries and figs thrive in a patch nearby.

In this photo: An old sink, set atop a found-wood pedestal, offers a convenient spot for hosing off vegetables.
