Brad Goreski
Canada's stylist to the stars.
An expert in all things style, this Port Perry, Ontario native works doggedly behind the scenes in Hollywood making chic sartorial decisions, so his clients glide into the public eye in preened perfection. But, he's adaptable in his approach, keeping the personality and shape of each star in mind instead of draping them all in the latest must-haves. He favours bolder looks than many of his clients would likely go for if left to their own devices. Goreski himself is a peacock amongst pigeons: His colourful style sees him wearing floral pants with ease, or a hot pink blazer with a blue and white gingham bowtie — his signature accessory. "It's all dress-up for me," he says.
Made famous by his three seasons on The Rachel Zoe Project, Goreski now has his own star-studded client list and TV show; It's a Brad, Brad World (premieres on Bravo March 6th) chronicles his adventures in the world of fashion styling. These days, Goreski is branching out as the brand stylist for Kate Spade. Things he loves? Statement sneakers: "I have four pairs of Alejandro Ingelmo Trons. They're attention-grabbing and comfortable. They take a boring grey polo and jeans to new heights." He also finds Danish modern furniture with clean, elegant and simple lines "very soothing."
Mary McDonald
One of the stars of Million Dollar Decorators.
Designer and TV personality Mary McDonald is the epitome of a modern-day Los Angeles woman. Fans have come to know her boisterous, but not brash, demeanor and adept navigation of the oft-tricky world of high-end clients as one of five talented designers featured on the compelling Bravo show Million Dollar
Decorators.
She's bold with colour and pattern (often at the same time), plays with scale to dramatic effect, yet also knows the impact of a space layered in nothing but serene whites. Her elegant looks come with a healthy dose of the exotic, and often, a bit of whimsy. With the show, a bustling design business, a book, a line of lighting for Robert Abbey, plus fabric and rug lines under her belt, this ambitious Angeleno might be popping up even more in the near future. She appreciates furniture with Greek lines, hammered metal hardware and timeless Hermès handbags: "I love the structure, and that it looks like a doctor's bag."
Jenna Lyons
The talented creative director behind J.Crew.
There's something very European about Jenna Lyons, the charismatic president and executive creative director of J.Crew — a very North American company. She has the laissez-faire tresses of a Parisian, the stature of an Italian model, and the allure of a Swiss heiress. Her home reads the same way: a dramatic black bedroom is cosy not harsh, and a mod kitchen is family-friendly not cold. Lyons' innate sense of style has made her a sartorial celebrity.
The well-heeled follow her every move, looking to see what the company's "commander in chic" will choose next. And with J.Crew stores now open across Canada, we're hooked on the brand, too. Lyons' has this modern-classic light fixture in her own bedroom in Brooklyn. Life (2011 Little, Brown and Company) by Keith Richards is her must-read: "Such a full, intense, crazy life." And her MP3 player of choice is Sony's S Series Walkman Video MP3 player: "I like that I can figure out how to use this."
Celerie Kemble
A glamorous New York designer who loves classic style with a modern twist.
Celerie Kemble imparts a polished sophistication to her designs that is well beyond her years. Born in Palm Beach, Fla., the quick-witted New York designer imported the Sunshine State's joyful decorating slant to the gritty big city and beyond.
Working on unique homes from Texas to Italy, Kemble teams with her mother, designer Mimi McMakin, who founded Kemble Interiors in the 1980s. She favours bold and soulful looks rife with texture and a sense of history. Her favourite book is A Fine Balance (1997 McClelland & Stewart) by Canadian author Rohinton Mistry, and she can't resist a chic match strike: "Due to weird laws, quick-light matches and the strikes are hard to find in New York." And she can't get enough of luxurious materials like lacquered parchment, brightly dyed shagreen and antique bamboo.

Nate Berkus
Design celeb and author of The Things That Matter.
The New York-based designer and author is almost as famous for his thatch of hair as he is for his discerning taste and knack for budget decorating. His design motto? "Your home should tell your story, and the way you do that is through your things. They show where you've been, who you've loved, who you aspire to be," he says. This affordable dipped bowl is from his collection for Target. Berkus maintains that multipurpose furniture like a classic Parsons table is always a smart investment.
John Gidding
Designer and host of HGTV's Curb Appeal.
San Francisco-based John Gidding graduated with a master's in architecture from Harvard, then appeared in shows like Knock First and Designed to Sell. He also opened his own interior design business in New York in 2005 (and still keeps an office and apartment in the Big Apple). His favourite front door colours are emerald, cerulean and robin's-egg blue: "You don't see them that often, but everyone comments on a beautiful front door. Fire-engine red has been done to death," he says. When it comes to sprucing up your façade, Gidding offers some valuable advice: "You can change your mailbox, lighting, house number and paint the front door, typically for under $200, to achieve a new look. Make sure all the finishes match. These are the first things people look for when they come to your house."
Kathryn Ireland
A British textile designer.
When it comes to balancing fabulous with formal, there's no one better than Kathryn Ireland. She's introduced her signature mix of bold patterns and elegant furnishings to many a million-dollar home, from the English countryside to the Hollywood Hills. The British-born, L.A.-based designer's unique style won her celebrity clients — Steve Martin, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lindsay Lohan, to name a few — and her first collection of fabrics in 1997. Ireland's line of textiles is sold around the world, she's authored four coffee-table books, and is now on Bravo's Million Dollar Decorators. Despite three rambunctious sons, construction snafus and difficult clients, Ireland always keeps her cool — Champagne in one hand, fabric samples in the other. Her choice chair is a Gustavian, her favourite outfit is a Vince sweater, leggings and boots, and she couldn't live without her Aga range: "I've got one in France and a pistachio-coloured one in L.A."

Michael Bruno
The intrepid founder of 1stdibs.
While most of us only dream of perusing the aisles at Paris's Marché aux Puces, the innovative website 1stdibs.com made it possible for us to buy its offerings from afar. The company's visionary founder, Michael Bruno, was strolling that very flea market when he decided to bring these amazing finds to the world — via the internet. The former real-estate agent turned his love of old homes, architecture, and by extension, antiques into a lucrative online business.
Started as a direct vendor-to-designer antiques site in the late 1990s, it's grown into an all-encompassing online marketplace and resource site for everyone. Bruno is no stranger to hard work and innovative business ventures. "I always tread lightly when I do something new to see if it's the right path, but I'll always do rather than talk." The advent of vintage style and of mixing antique with modern must give some credit to 1stdibs; it made vintage such a hot collectible. As for his own collectibles, he loves the playful element that animal-themed accessories add to a bar — like this penguin-shaped cocktail shaker. "I read The New York Times online, but I still read the printed edition, too." And he owns ten pairs of these gorgeous John Lobb shoes.

How to Spice Up a Bath with Tile
There is something to be said for a bathroom that provides pure relaxation—but in a get-up-and-go world, it should also dish up a dose of energy. To achieve that duality for her clients, Architect Nicole Migeon designed a light-filled, green-hued, 7-by-9-foot master bath so fresh and inviting, it calms yet awakens the senses.
The room’s all-encompassing tile work was a collaboration between Migeon and the New York City homeowners, a couple who work in the film, stage, and fine arts worlds. “As visual people, they enjoy pattern,” says Migeon, who herself avows a passion for pattern and tile. “My influence was 12th to 14th century Islamic tile, and the homeowner particularly loves Art Deco tile from the 1920s and 1930s,” says Migeon, who embarked on many trips with the client to simply look at tile at locations throughout New York City.
The tile pattern for the bath actually evolved from a vintage pattern of Daltile, an American tile manufacturer whose early 20th century mosaic bathroom floors featured 1-by-1-inch hexagonal tiles. “Those old baths typically had black-and-white hexagonal tiles on the floor only,” notes Migeon. “We chose olive and white and created a wall pattern.”
Starting with the Daltile vintage template, Migeon and her clients created a custom pattern, and tested it by ordering a 2-by-2-foot mosaic sample. With that sample in hand, Migeon drew all the elevations for the entire room to finalize the tile design with her clients. Satisfied, they ordered the custom mosaic, which arrived three months later in 12-by-12-inch sheets, ready for installation by the job’s general contractor, Glenhill Construction.
The result is a room with relatively tame floors (white 1-by-1-inch hexagon tiles with a double dotted line of olive 1-by-1-inch hexagons along the perimeter), and walls that dazzle. Olive and white hexagonal tiles create an eye-popping repetitive pattern that climbs from the floor up to a height of more than eight feet. “It’s a pattern that’s all about activating the eye and the senses,” says Migeon, in describing an intentional departure from the notion of baths as serene retreats.
Because the rest of the four-story townhouse conveys a serene aura—floor-to-ceiling glass walls, reclaimed pine floors, built-in furniture—the tiled bath represents an oasis of a more active sort. Migeon knows the world of serene spas well, for her architectural practice has a niche specialty in commercial spa and salon design. Indeed, she often brings spa-like drama to her residential designs. Here, she did so by designing two steps up to the tub. The ascent creates the opportunity for a view out the bath window toward a city icon: the Empire State Building. The room’s other elements include chrome fittings; teak cabinetry; glassos step treads, tub surface, and window trim (glassos is a man-made crystallized glass); and two frameless clerestory windows that allow natural light from the bedroom to illuminate the bath. “The rest of the house is very serene,” notes Migeon. “But the bath, well it’s just fun.”

A Live-in Bath
When architects Todd Pritchett and Craig Dixon redesigned the master bath in their country house, they created a space that was much more than simply a place to shave and shower. By removing walls to quadruple the bath’s size and coordinating its floor plan with the adjoining bedroom and sitting room/sunroom, the duo, partners of Atlanta-based Todd Pritchett Design Studio, built a private place that actually functions in tandem with the adjoining spaces as an all-around lounge/living room/dressing room.
The 300-square-foot bath area, which includes an air-jet tub, a pair of vanities, a double-size glass-enclosed shower, and a walk-in closet and storage closet, maintains the character of their 1916 European-style Atlanta home while at the same time keeping it up to date with contemporary touches. “It has simple, clean lines yet is rich and well detailed,” says Pritchett. “And we made it cozy by adding stained-wood beams and a painted-wood ceiling.”
Custom cabinetry containing lots of drawers reduces clutter, as do the wall-mounted faucets. “Everything looks clean—until you open things and see the mess,” Dixon says.
The floor plan of the bath is open, but Pritchett and Dixon carved out separate, yet equal, spaces for themselves. Pritchett’s vanity overlooks the sunroom and bedroom, while Dixon’s is tucked neatly next to the shower. “This way, we are together, but we aren’t intruding on each other,” Dixon says.
The bath is the perfect complement to the bedroom, which is defined by a vaulted ceiling and fireplace, and the sunroom, which is well-stocked with travel books and maps. “We can hang out, have a bath, look at the trees and plan our next trip,” says Pritchett. “The mirror over my vanity twists, so I get a full view of the trees.” Adds Dixon, “It’s also great to sit in the tub and read the paper.”
Convenience, too, was given priority. A floor-to-ceiling cabinet with open shelves was placed next to the shower so they can grab towels for drying off, and Pritchett’s swivel vanity mirror has storage compartments for toiletries on its back.
Although the bathroom was planned around existing double-hung windows to retain architectural integrity, the shower’s window, which is on the back of the house, was replaced by a smaller awning-style one that can be kept open even in the rain.
The two-story, two-family house has 3,000 feet on each level, but Pritchett and Dixon say they would be content to call their master suite home sweet home. “We could do it if only we had a little kitchen,” Pritchett says.

Creating a Home Spa
There’s something transcendent about a truly luxurious bathroom—but you don’t have to go to a four-star resort to get the experience. We went to interior designer Kyle Timothy Blood, of Kyle Timothy Home in East Hampton, New York, and Eddy Doumas, owner of Worth Interiors in Vail, Colorado, for their ideas on creating a spa feeling in your own home.
Soup Up Your Tub
Mention the words luxury and bath, and most people’s minds turn immediately to the tub. “I steer my clients toward freestanding tubs because I think they’re sexier than undermounts with miles of cold countertops,” says Doumas. “You can add a beautiful piece of furniture and a basket for towels to the floor space you save.” Whether you prefer the romance of a claw-foot tub or the extravagance of a marble surround, make sure your tub selection has adequate length and depth for comfortable bathing. The newest programmable tubs can automatically set the desired water level and temperature for up to three different bathers and have it ready at the touch of a button.
Add to the experience with chromatherapy, using colored lights in and around your tub to create an atmosphere to match your mood. Then consider adding air jets. Unlike the traditional targeted water jets, these can create a range of sensations—from delicate fingers to a rushing mountain stream—by emitting tiny effervescent bubbles. Plus, they’re less noisy than water-jet versions.
Enhance Your Daily Routine
Another key to getting a spa feeling at home is to look at what features you use the most. In Doumas’s opinion, a “killer shower” is the core of an indulgent bathroom. “Tubs are nice, but a shower is what you use every day.” Choose a showerhead that adjusts to your preferred water pressure and, if you’re remodeling, consider widening the space to give yourself room to maneuver. “A shower should have lots of space—whether one or two people are using it,” he says.
You can further customize your space with steam options or a combination of showerhead and wall-mounted body sprays. Despite the lure of a warm water soak, Blood finds that homeowners are shifting away from the “rain forest showerhead” to water-saving fixtures. “By choosing one of these, you can still have luxury while saving water and money.” You might also consider these budget-friendly quick fixes: Clear the shower stall of clutter and corral products into one designated area, and opt for a light-colored or translucent shower curtain to brighten the space.
For Blood, a “gracious, deep sink” with plenty of counter space is critical. “It’s the site of daily rituals where men shave and women put on their makeup,” says Blood. “It’s the first thing you use in the morning and the last place you are at night. It shouldn’t look like the kitchen.”
Add Warmth
Whether you’re stepping out of the tub or shower, nothing beats wrapping a warm towel around your body and feeling heated tiles beneath your feet. Consider wall-mounted radiator/towel warmers that will raise the room temperature while giving your towels that fresh-from-the-dryer feel. Some designers are solving the cold towel dilemma by installing warming drawers—long a kitchen staple—right into the vanity.
“Radiant heat floors are another inexpensive way to add luxury to your bath,” says Blood. This can be accomplished with an electric grid system or with water hoses. “If you are building from the ground up and have solar panels, water hoses are the greener solution. For retrofits, electric is easier.” A programmable remote control can turn the floor heat on just as your alarm goes off and you head to the bathroom. If all else fails, trade a thin bath mat for an ultra-plush one.
Beyond the Basics
Using candles and oils for bathtime aromatherapy is a no-brainer, but take it a step further by selecting a showerhead that allows you to add the essential oils of your choice directly to it. Music can also enhance your experience. Place waterproof speakers in or near the shower and bath, or install entertainment components like surround-sound speakers, a radio and a CD player directly into the tub or stall.
You could even install a television in your bathroom, with a transparent mirror mounted over it that disappears for the morning news and reappears when you’re ready to shave—but the experts are split on this feature. “Your bathroom should be a place you can go to get away from the world,” says Blood. “If you need to watch something, get a fireplace.”
Must-Haves
A towel warmer not only keeps you toasty après bath, it keeps towels fresher longer. Our Pick: Runtal Omnipanel Towel Warmer, starting at $420 for hydronic hot water systems and $699 for plug-in models; 800-526-2621, runtalnorthamerica.com.
An array of color tones and pleasing music transforms an everyday ritual into a soothing experience. Our Pick: ThermaSol Serenity Light & Music System, $1,599–$1,689; 800-776-0711, thermasol.com.

Beauty Secrets: Small Bathroom Ideas - Part 2
Cabinet of Curiosities Wall Covering
Decorator Steven Gambrel transformed the powder room of his 1810 Sag Harbor, New York, house into a fantasy of flora and fauna, covering the walls with pages from a reissue of Cabinet of Natural Curiosities, a compilation of elaborate engravings commissioned by the 18th-century Dutch naturalist Albertus Seba.
Color Grid
At designer Jamie Drake’s New York apartment, the powder room’s exuberant grid of colors pays tribute to the 1960s artist Gene Davis, echoing the palette of his striped silk screens. The vivid squares were painted by Moira Kelly, and the artwork is by Lucio Fontana.
Mirrored Wall
A mirrored wall and a brass-and-marble étagère add an urbane touch to the powder room of Mike Clifford’s 1930s Tudor house in Los Angeles. The washstand is by Waterworks, and the walls are painted in Fine Paints of Europe’s Dutch Chocolate.
Bold Walls
Grass-green walls studded with hand-painted aluminum flowers create a garden oasis in the powder room of a San Francisco house decorated by Katie Ridder. The Queen Anne–style mirror is framed in cobalt glass and gilt wood, and Ridder designed the coral-tipped Lucite sconces.
