Get Organized: Bathroom

Tidy Tips

If you’ve let order go down the drain, it’s time to come clean. Julie Morgenstern, author of When Organizing Isn’t Enough: SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life (Fireside, 2008), offers this advice on how to banish bathroom clutter.

A Separate Peace: Divide the bathroom into activity zones—bathing, laundry, grooming and so forth. Assign every item in the room to one of these stations and put them back after each use.

Jet Set: Pack duplicate toiletries and cosmetics you can’t leave home without in a travel bag and store them in your suitcase.

Under Cover: Fashion a fabric skirt for a wall-hung sink to create storage for unattractive items such as cleaners and hot rollers.

Doctor’s Orders: Throw out expired medications safely. Find out if your community has a household hazardous waste facility or if your pharmacy has a drug recycling program.

Trend Report: Bathrooms

Barbara Sallick, cofounder and senior vice president of design, Waterworks: “Environmental building codes are revamping the bathroom as we know it. Brass fixtures are now lead free. Years ago, a toilet flush took many gallons of water; we’re now down to 1.2 gallons a flush. Recycled shower water—known as gray water—is next. In the past, a plumber showed you your options for a bathroom. Today, the bath is decorated with the same care and attention as the rest of the house. You can have music, furniture, textiles, and refrigerators— and if you want to drink Champagne in the bath, why not? “My fantasy would be to offer a bathroom in a box: bathtub, sink or vanity, toilet, surface materials, and simple installation manual. It would be a curated package for people who don’t have a designer or who are in a hurry.”

Judd Lord, director of industrial design, Delta Faucet Company: “We’re seeing clean, minimalist design dressed in warmer, traditional finishes such as shades of bronze. There is a move to eliminate hardware, with hidden, built-in handles for a cleaner look. “In the future, bathroom layouts will include more zones, such as dry or wet areas. There will be more individual spaces—dedicated dressing and makeup areas and water closets.”

David Kohler, president and COO, Kohler Company: “The bathroom of the future will be enabled by advanced electronics, but not just for the sake of technology. It’s about creating new experiences and having intuitive control and convenience while conserving water. In many ways, the technology is already here. Our DTV Prompt Digital Showering System has smart features such as a warm-up mode, timer, and the ability to pause water flow. And Robern’s TViD mirrored bath cabinet [above] has an 8-inch LCD television incorporated in the door.”

Amy Tanenbaum, executive vice president, Sicis North America: “Bath design has been focused on sustainability. Now we’re starting to address a more personal element: how our rooms make us feel. The more our society delves into technology, the more we’ll need to surround ourselves with nature. Sicis’s Biophilia tile collection has imagery—flowers, birds, trees, and butterflies—that re-creates the outdoors inside.”

Insider Sources: Bathroom Accessories

Whether you’re looking for a chic update for the powder room or putting the finishing touches on a master bathroom renovation, the Web can be a great resource. We asked designers Michael S. Smith, Laura Kirar, Andrew Flesher, and Ghislaine Viñas about their go-to sites for bathroom accessories.

Waterworks

Best known for high-end fittings and faucets, Waterworks also has an extensive collection of bathroom accessories from pewter tissue-box covers to crystal towel bars. And the new Waterworks Studio collection offers the brand’s signature look at a more accessible price point. Prices range from under $10 to more than $1,000; shipping costs start at $7 and goes to up to 7 percent of the order value.

Canvas

Three of the four designers cited Canvas as a source for interesting and unusual accessories for bathrooms, from their Ethiopian cotton towels to the papier mâché wastebaskets (a favorite of Viñas). Prices range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars; shipping will set you back $5-$10.

Anthropologie

It is fitting that this vendor of frilly dresses and quirky tea towels also offers pretty pieces to dress up the bath. It’s a favorite of Smith, author of Michael S. Smith Kitchens and Bathrooms, who says the company’s soap dishes and bathmats give some “quick charm and whimsy to the bathroom.” At $8 to $148, Anthropologie’s wares are quite affordable; shipping starts at $7.

Restoration Hardware

For classic, chic accents, many designers turn to Restoration Hardware. “It’s perfect for simple, classic containers and vanity accessories at great price points,” says Kirar. And Flesher points to their pharmacy-style bottles and Turkish towels as especially great finds. Prices range from $7 to several hundred; shipping runs from $5 to $50.

Frontgate

Flesher shops Frontgate for their monogrammed guest towels, which he says are “so thick and absorbent.” The retailer also offers a full range of bath accessories ranging from $30 to several thousand dollars. Shipping starts at $5.

Sferra

They’re best known for their luxury bedding, but Sferra also offers high-end bathroom textiles. “They’re my go-to resource for fine towels,” says Kirar, “They come in a variety of rich colors and are so soft.” Towel prices range from $7 to $183; shipping runs from $7.50 to $75.

Urban Archaeology

Restoring a Victorian townhouse? Look no further than Urban Archaeology for that perfect period soap dish or towel bar. The company offers most of its bath accessories in several metal finishes to match every interior. Smith appreciates the “beautiful reproductions” for their heavy scale. Prices start at $50 for a simple hook; shipping is quoted individually for each order.

West Elm

The popular retailer offers an affordable selection of bathroom accessories that changes seasonally, including towels, shower curtains, and storage pieces. The fashion-forward look of West Elm’s wares is global (Turkish-style hand towels) and graphic (boldly striped shower curtains). Prices range from under $6 to several hundred, with most items under $50. Shipping starts at $5.

Rocket St. George

For quietly quirky accessories with a touch of old-fashioned charm, Flesher looks to Rocket St. George, an online store specializing in British design. (He’s particularly fond of the company’s ceramic pieces.) The bath section of the site has prices from approximately $8 to $50; all U.S. deliveries are charged a flat rate of approximately $35.

A Blissful Bathroom

An architect crafts his dream bath using luxurious materials that reflect the beauty of the outdoor world.

What I like most about the master bath at my weekend house in North Sea, New York, is that it is a space that embraces its surroundings. The room faces a bird sanctuary, so I can shower and see the bay or take a bath and look at an apple tree in a courtyard. The home’s magical site is on a remote dirt road seemingly in the middle of nowhere on Long Island. Opening the bath to the land makes it special.

When the house was designed with the help of my dearest friend from Harvard’s architecture department, Reed Morrison, we decided it was paramount to create a second-floor master suite where you could watch the path of light from sunrise to sunset. The views are what’s important, as experienced through a floor plan that connects the study, dressing space, bedroom, and bath to the outdoors. When you look from one end of this open-plan space to the other—sections can be closed off for privacy if desired—you are especially aware of the landscape.

The bath materials, consequently, take their cue from their environment. The gleam of the quartzite floor references the sky and water. Nature’s perfect imperfection is evidenced in the veining of the marble, which resembles the shadows the oak trees project when they’ve lost their leaves and are silhouetted against the winter sky. The sinks, one of the walls, and the built-in bench, however, are made of DuPont Corian. Even that man-made material takes on a natural character here as it interplays with light. And for people with crazy-clean tendencies like me, Corian is wonderful—going over it with a little dab of Soft Scrub results in an almost preternatural white.

Peter L. Shelton—he’s my partner in our design and architecture firm Shelton, Mindel & Associates—and I worked together on an extensive bath and fittings collection for Waterworks, which has been deployed throughout the space. The fixtures are inspired by straightforward utilitarian objects—the kind of things you might find in a janitor’s closet. The thermostat on the tub, for example, almost looks like a steam valve. The chrome fixtures are a cool interplay with the warm elements—the light as seen through the glass, the rich texture of the towels, and the palette of nature. Sometimes things that are cool are best appreciated when placed near things that are warm. And colors often are more poignant juxtaposed against a neutral palette. There really is no color in this room. Instead it offers an oversize porthole from which you can watch the seasons change and the movement of the tides. The tub is a womb with a view.

The best thing about the bath is that the space distills the architecture and the landscape down to their essences. I also think the room transcends fashion and style because it defers to the site. Like the inhabitants of the bird sanctuary it overlooks, I feel at home perched in this sparkling lookout. It’s a nest of sorts.

Sarah Richardson’s Cottage Makeover - Part 2

Kitchen-Dining Area

Then: A wider-stripe fabric, aptly named Summerside, covers the chairs in the lounge. “It echoes the dining area without being an exact match,” said the designer, who piled on pillows in fanciful patterns, including a blue paisley.

Kitchen-Dining Area

Finally: Wicker baskets, a distressed wood-frame mirror, an antique pine dresser—even some straw hats—bring warmth and depth to the space.

Bright Idea!
Got a big empty wall and a small mirror? Fill the extra space with a frame of sun hats.

Living Room

Richardson expanded the cabin’s size from 1,800 to 2,050 square feet with this window-walled addition, creating a separate living room – and taking full advantage of the home’s water views.

“The whole idea behind this place is to embrace the natural environment,” she explained. “It’s about authentic experiences, not watching TV.”

Living Room

Starting Point: “The Chiang Mai Dragon fabric on the ottomans has so many different blues, from inky indigo to faded cornflower,” Richardson pointed out. “It really gave me the freedom to use a variety of colors.”

Sarah Richardson’s Cottage Makeover

Sarah Richardson, interior designer and host of HGTV’s Sarah’s House, traces the evolution of her family’s cozy summer cottage, explaining every step along the way. “I wanted instant history – as if the home had been assembled over time.”

Kitchen-Dining Area

The cabin’s open floor plan presented Richardson with a challenge common in new houses: how to carve distinct zones – in this case, a kitchen, a dining area, and a comfy lounging spot – from one cavernous great room, while still preserving visual flow. Her solution? A shared color scheme.

“I’ve long collected ceramics in blue and green,” she said. Once Richardson found a cache of old blue barn wood, she was off and running.

Kitchen-Dining Area
Starting Point: Richardson installed the weathered blue boards on the kitchen island – which faces out toward the rest of the room – then framed the salvaged planks with new lumber, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Wedgewood Gray.

Kitchen-Dining Area

From There: She chose two different gray-greens by Benjamin Moore for the cabinets: Gray Cashmere up top and November Rain below. The marble tile backsplash incorporates the kitchen’s many hues and loosely resembles life buoys – a nod to the home’s island location.

Kitchen-Dining Area

Next: Richardson carried the palette into the dining area via an aged green bench and a trio of vintage bankers’ chairs painted Glidden’s Oxford Blue. The wing chairs wear a floral on the front and stripes on the back. “Both fabrics had been discontinued,” she explained, “so I improvised with remnants.”

Guest Room Details
Because the homeowners gave thoughtful attention to furnishing this room, it feels inviting enough to use for guests. The key: furniture that does double-duty. An antique pine cupboard in one corner, along with the closet, provides guest supplies, and a comfortable AeroBed offers temporary sleeping quarters that pack up small.

Collections personalize any space, and particularly a home office: Vintage tin picnic "baskets" can hold everything from electronics to bank statements or photos. Flea market portraits and a whimsical pom-pom pillow from E Bella add visual and tactile appeal.

Amenities Cabinet

Linens, pillows, and towels are stored on the shelves of this cupboard as well as in baskets in the closet. Anticipating guests' needs equals gracious hospitality.

Toiletries, such as small sizes of shampoo, toothpaste, aspirin, and other items a guest might require, are neatly stowed in a basket for easy portability to the bath.

Sleepover Stowaway

The AeroBed and other good quality inflatable mattresses are an excellent option when space is an issue. The nicest models inflate to traditional bed height. When not in use, it rolls up compactly and here is stored in a vintage metal locker behind the door.

Small-Room Strategies

To help make a compact space truly multipurpose:

1. Think about how the room is used most of the time. "We wanted more than a room that we'd use only occasionally," says the homeowner, "so the priority became its home office function — that's what we needed most."

2. Choose furniture with versatility, so it can adapt to different needs. Armoires, cupboards, chests, and other storage pieces can be utilized in almost any room and function in a wide variety of ways.

3. Make it a room you want to spend time in. Comfortable seating, draperies, and a rug make this feel as nice as the living room, and why not, when so much time is spent on the computer?

4. Build in storage for better looks and function. The custom-built shelf that runs the width of the room looks nicer, and holds more, than a small ready-made shelf would. Adjustable shelves on tracks in the closet can be shifted as storage needs change.

Double-Duty Makeover - Part 3

Magazine Rack
Another space saver: A vertical magazine rack from Viva Terra makes the most of the back of a door.

Twig Shelf

A rustic twig shelf was built to run the length of one wall, squeezing storage into space typically wasted above the doorways. Now it's a place to store books, intermingled here with pieces of midcentury pottery.

"Before" Closet

A closet offers a lot of office and guest room storage with the addition of shelves in place of the standard single clothing rod.

Organized Closet

A luggage rack and hangers, hung from hooks on the door, are at the ready for guests; recessing the shelves several inches ensures room on the door for multiple garments.

The printer, wireless Internet hub, and other electronics are sequestered here with the addition of an electrical outlet.

Pretty ribbon edges each shelf rim (adhered with double-stick tape), a grace note that brings pleasure to organizing.

Colorful files and boxes, an accordion rack, and deep woven baskets (on floor) from Russel+Hazel, the MacBeth Collection, Whitmor, and Anna Griffin keep office files and folders attractively in order.

Base Coat

This centuries-old technique is a DIY project with the Country Living Artisans collection from Caromal Colours.

Gold Leaf

The kit includes everything required — a base coat, Sticky Size, and gold leaf — to gild almost any surface.

File Cabinet

A lateral file cabinet in limed oak looks more like a handsome blanket chest than office furniture, and it tucks in easily beside the desk.

Tidy Drawer

The desk has only one drawer for files, so storage is maximized with shallow wire baskets to neatly corral office supplies.

Double-Duty Makeover

A bedroom morphs into a gorgeous personal home office — and still doubles as a cozy guest room when family or friends are in town.

An Inviting Office

This home office feels less utilitarian than a typical work space and more like an inviting sitting room, thanks to concealed storage — a closet fitted top to bottom with shelves, a cabinet that holds files — and a bevy of ultra-pretty yet practical organizers, from patterned metal bins to woven baskets to eye-pleasing folders.

The Dunloe wallpaper from Osborne & Little provided all the color cues for the room, and it mixes easily with the Dash & Albert Cameo Roses hooked rug and striped Silk Trading curtains. Pink bouclé slipcovers help red leather stools blend in with the palette. Woven wooden shades are from the Shade Store.

"Before" Office

"I wasn't sure what to do with this room," says the owner of this Westchester, N.Y., home. "We wanted a guest room, but I was also in need of a home office." With thoughtful organizational strategies that allowed her to maximize every inch of this 12- by 13-foot space, she was able to have both.

Gilded Bulletin Board

A tall bulletin board beside the desk serves as inspiration and a catchall for invitations, photos, and more. Gold-leafing the frame made it as elegant as the rest of the decor. The homeowner's collection of vintage curtain holdbacks serves as pushpins. The bulletin board is from Ballard Designs.

Plain Bulletin Board

A plain white-framed cork bulletin board gets a glorious makeover with gilding.

15 Ideas for Home Decor You Can Make - Part 4

Paper Quilt

"Stitch" up a colorful paper quilt—no sewing necessary! Inspired by a post on lindaandharriett.blogspot.com, this playful take on a folk-art staple offers a smart way to repurpose scraps of paper. (We used open stock: from 99 cents per 12-inch-square sheet; michaels.com for stores.) Select four different patterned papers; cut 20 two-inch squares from three of them and 21 two-inch squares from the fourth (the extra square will serve as the center of your quilt). Following our pattern template, adhere the squares to an 18-inch-square illustration board using a glue stick. Then, pop the quilt in a frame to show off your handiwork (similar 20-inch-square frame, $47.82; salinepictureframe.com).

Wall Decals

For a delicate stenciled effect on a wall, stylist Paul Lowe took a digital snapshot of a Royal Copenhagen Blue Fluted Mega plate. After enlarging the pattern by several hundred percent, he printed the designs on standard printer paper and cut them out. To determine the best arrangement, he first taped the patterns to the wall with tiny pieces of tape. Then he applied wallpaper paste to the backs of the designs and attached them to the wall.

Decorative Plates

Antique-shop plates can decorate a wall when embellished with word decals, spelling out a favorite quotation.

15 Ideas for Home Decor You Can Make - Part 3

Fork & Spoon Door Pulls

Fashion these sturdy handles from two same-size serving pieces.

Step 1: Flip one facedown, then following the package directions, apply bonding glue to the flat end of a one-inch aluminum screw post ($11.95 for box of 100; screwpost.com). Quickly press the post to the base of the flatware's handle (approximately a half inch from the end), and hold until a bond forms. Let dry for 20 minutes.

Step 2: At the serving end of the utensil, find the flattest point to glue on a second post (approximately two inches in from the end). Let dry, then repeat for second utensil.

Step 3: Remove your existing cabinet hardware and drill new holes, if necessary, to correspond with the posts. Finish by screwing flatware into place from the inside of the doors.

Recycled-Sweater Sham

To make this sham, you'll need an 18-inch square pillow insert and a large sweater, cut into two 19-inch squares. Sew the right sides of the wool together along the edges, leaving the bottom open. Turn right side out and insert the pillow form, then stitch the bottom closed. For the flower, cover a two-inch circle of card stock with a piece of a thin sweater; hot-glue to the circle's back. Next, fold a 3- by 20-inch strip of another sweater in half lengthwise. Glue the edges together, then sew a running stitch down the strip lengthwise along the glued seam. Once you've stitched the entire length, pull the thread to gather the fabric and knot. Hot-glue the gathered edge in a circle to the back of the card stock, then hot-glue a pin-back in the center and affix to the pillow.

Clothespin Table

To adorn an apron-sided table, determine how many clothespins you'll need to trim each side. Then paint the table and pins. When dry, apply hot glue to the entire back side of each pin; hold vertically against the apron, with the closed end facing down, until a bond forms. Glue the next pin directly beside the first; continue this process until the space is filled. Repeat on the other three sides, then allow the table to dry for one hour.

Ruler Table Runner

Follow the steps below to do a number on a drab drop cloth ($10.98 for 6'W × 9'L; homedepot.com for stores).

Step 1: Cut a strip from the drop cloth that measures 14¼"W × 8'1¼"L; press it to iron out any wrinkles. To hem all four edges: Turn each under ⅝"; press, then stitch in place using a ½-inch seam allowance. The fabric strip should now measure 13"W × 96"L.

Step 2: Working on one of the strip's long sides and starting at a short end, use a ruler and a pencil to measure and mark one inch at a time; continue until you reach the other end. Repeat on the opposite side of the strip. Next, using your ruler and our photo as a guide, draw a line at each mark, varying the line lengths. At each 16th mark, draw a line that crosses the entire strip. Trace over the lines using a black fabric marker ($2.99; createforless.com), which dries almost instantly.

Step 3: Just left of each line that crosses the strip, and working in numerical order, center a six-inch-high number stencil ($14.62 for set; stencilsonline.com). Affix with stencil adhesive ($4.65 for 4.4 ounces; misterart.com).

Step 4: Using a foam stencil brush, fill in the stencil with fabric paint ($2.19 for 1 ounce; createforless.com) . Let dry about four hours. Remove stencils; if needed, touch up the numbers with a paintbrush. To clean the runner, wash by hand and hang dry.

Paint-by-Number Side Table

Measure the surface you want to cover, and mark those dimensions atop the desired section of your painting. Score the marked lines with a craft knife, then cut along the scored marks with sharp scissors. Secure the image to your object's surface with a strong adhesive, like Magna-Tac 809 ($6.98 for eight ounces; mjtrim.com), and let dry for an hour. Protect the image with two coats of Plaid Clear Acrylic Matte Sealer ($3.93 for six ounces; sears.com), allowing 15 minutes of drying time after each coat. Table: For most tabletops, you'll need to use a larger than average painting.

15 Ideas for Home Decor You Can Make - Part 2

Cross-Stitch Wall Art

Swap a needle and thread for a brush and paint to re-create this oversize riff on an embroidered rose, by Dutch artist Eline Pellinkhof. Don't worry: You won't have to freehand it. Pellinkhof sells the basic cross-stitch stencil for $20 at bypetra.nl. And we've adapted her painting guide—divided into 16 sections, each the same size as the stencil—to make things even easier.

Step 1: Using a pencil, mark the spot on your wall where you'd like to center the design. Draw two 54-inch lines—one vertical and one horizontal—that intersect with the mark at their midpoints. (These are the blue lines noted on our guide.)

Step 2: We recommend numbering and lettering the stencil's edges with a Sharpie, as indicated here. To replicate section I on the guide, align the stencil so that its right side is flush against the uppermost portion of your vertical line. Attach the stencil to your wall with painter's tape and use a pencil to lightly trace crosses in each box where paint is called for; then pencil in the corresponding initials for each box's paint color in the center of the cross.

Step 3: Move the stencil to the other sections indicated by our guide and continue lightly marking crosses and initials.

Step 4: Working one color at a time, and using a ¼-inch flat brush, paint all crosses in the corresponding shade indicated by our key. Let paint dry for 24 hours, then carefully erase any visible pencil lines.

Flameless Candle Decals

All you need to turn battery-operated pillars into the very epitome of a bright idea: our free filament-bulb illustrations and waterslide decal paper ($5.95 for 3 8½"W x 11"L sheets; amazon.com). Download the images of your choice and resize them, as necessary, to fit your candles. Print each image onto a sheet of decal paper and cut out. Following the package instructions for the paper, transfer the image to your candle; let set for 30 minutes. Apply a coat of protective sealant (Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Spray, $6.61 for 6 oz.; amazon.com), and allow five minutes of drying time before flicking the candle on.

Lampshade-Frame Cocktail Tables

This project, featured in Juliette Goggin and Stacy Sirk's book Junk Genius ($29.95; Cico), offers a smart way to upcycle cast-off lampshades—usually no more than $10 to $20 apiece at flea markets.

Step 1: Using scissors or an X-Acto knife, remove and discard all the fabric from your lampshade.

Step 2: Working in a well-ventilated area, apply two coats of white spray paint to the frame, allowing 30 minutes of drying time after each coat (Rust-Oleum All-Surface aerosol paint, $6.98 for 12 oz.; homedepot.com).

Step 3: Have a professional cut safety glass sized to either the same diameter as your frame's bottom or up to four inches wider; this typically costs from $50 to $70 for an 18- to 24-inch diameter piece. Apply a layer of strong-bonding clear epoxy along the top edge of the lampshade frame, following package instructions (Beacon's Glass, Metal & More glue,$6.19 for 2 oz.; amazon.com). Carefully center the glass atop the frame. Let dry for 24 hours before resting anything atop your repurposed masterpiece.

Mini Domes

Upend ordinary glassware as display domes.

To create these super-adorable mini cloches, raid your kitchen. We used (from left) a tumbler ($2.50; cb2.com), a stemless wineglass ($12.99 for four; libbey.com), and a canning jar ($21 for six; weckjars.com). Glue an iron lamp finial—like a tree (from $12.50; coloradodallas.com for stores)—to the bottom of each container with a thin coat of E6000 Multipurpose Adhesive ($3.99 for .5 ounces; joann.com). Let harden for an hour before enclosing tiny treasures underneath.
